Our busy Children’s Department covers two sites – Queens Hospital in Romford and King George’s Hospital in Ilford. We deliver a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services to our local population and have two inpatient wards, one with a co-located 4 bedded HDU, a day unit with a POSCU and haematology service, two outpatients departments with a GP ‘hot clinic’, a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and a Children’s Community Nursing team.Our 25 cot level 2 NICU is soon to be expanded to 35 cots and has community and outreach teams to support babies on discharge.We have two ED’s for children, one on each site, and these are among the busiest in the country with over 58,000 children’s attendances in year 2016-2017.Our Children’s nursing team is expanding, and is led by our new Divisional Nurse for Child Health, a new Trust wide role to ensure children and young people receive high quality care wherever they access services across our organisation. The nursing establishment has undergone redesign of nursing establishments where we have improved our Staff-Patient ratio from 1:5 to 1:4 – to provide better and safer care for our patients.Applicants are invited to apply for a band 7 Children’s Diabetes Specialist Nurse. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated multi-disciplinary team which provides a comprehensive diabetes service to children, young people and their families within the community and hospital setting. Our service covers 3 CCGS looking after over 300 paediatric patients covering a wide ethnic population. Our team consists of 3 consultants, a specialty doctor, five Band 7 PDSNs, one band 6 diabetes nurse and a dietitian. There is also a dedicated psychologist, offering a holistic diabetes service in line with the diabetes best practice tariff and DQuINS. Paediatric on call team have access to specialist diabetes team members via telephone on call service 7 days a week. Currently the on call rota is at one in seven. The MDT is very well supported by a diabetes administrator.We have an established insulin pump service and offer a comprehensive insulin pump training pathway for children and families to follow ensuring they have a smooth transition onto insulin pumps. Patients have the choice of different insulin pumps depending on suitability and patient choice. Our service also provides Continuous Glucose Monitoring Service depending on clinical need and funding approval. We provide a well-received school training program and also offer regular staff training sessions. We recognise that children, YP and families require extra support out of the hospital setting and organise fun filled activity days which provides a forum for education and support for children and families of all age groups. Carbohydrate counting workshops are held regularly to educate and empower children and families with various aspects of carbohydrate counting. We run three diabetes general clinics per week, one dedicated pump clinic per week, two nurse led clinics per week and two joint nurse/dietetic clinics a month. We provide a monthly transition clinic for YP once a month in collaboration with the adult diabetes specialist team. The Band 7 PDSNs have completed a diabetes course and there are three nurse prescribers within the team. The successful band 7 candidate would be expected to complete the diabetes module in due course if they have not already completed this. We are also part of the North Thames (East) Children’s and Young People’s Diabetes Network.We invite a professional, knowledgeable and motivated practitioner who is able to work as part of a large team to apply for this challenging and rewarding post.
