NHS Blood and Transplant is an integral part of the NHS. Operating a network of centres across England and North Wales, we collect around 2 million units of blood and tissues a year, converting them into safe and effective blood components and blood and tissue products for use in the treatment of patients. NHSBT also offer a world-class service in organ donation and transplantation, provide a range of specialist diagnostic services, carry out innovative research and development and operate the British Bone Marrow Registry. Through our network of specialist centres we provide expert support for half of the stem cell transplants performed in the UK each year. Applications are invited for the post of Healthcare Scientist within the Stem Cell and Immunotherapies SCI Unit at Filton, Bristol. Our expertise lies in the selection, processing and issue of bone marrow progenitor cells for Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation HSCT. Additionally, to aid the development of translational medicine, the SCI team contribute to the provision of advanced cellular therapies for a number of novel clinical trials throughout the country. Our partnership with transplant programmes and clinical colleagues provides the opportunity to learn a great deal about the interaction between the NHSBT therapeutic services and patient therapy. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with an interest in the field of cellular therapeutics to join our group. An understanding of the importance of the work carried out within our labs, plus the ability to work as a key member of a small team are essential. Working within HTA and MHRA licensed laboratories requires diligence, discipline and attention to detail. Candidates with such attributes are encouraged to apply for the post. The role will include the receipt and processing of stem cells for immediate issue or cryopreservation, organisation of daily tasks and responsibilities, retaining records and coordinating with the group to maintain a safe and effective patient focused service. There is a great emphasis on quality within the department and the role requires a meticulous approach to keeping accurate and thorough records, carrying out timely audits and the use of an established quality software for recordingincidents. The ability to communicate well with internal and external staff is essential. A working knowledge of basic IT packages and experience of working independently in an NHSBT or NHS laboratory environment is essential. The successful candidate will have the ability to motivate themselves and others to tackle a wide variety of tasks. Experience working within a GMP environment under HTA and/or MHRA regulations is desirable, but is not essential. Eligible candidates will be HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists will have completed the Specialist Portfolio in a relevant subject. The normal working hours for this position are 9.00-17.00 37.5 hrs/wk with a degree of flexibility to suit the needs of the service and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the on-call rota.
