JOB DESCRIPTION -CARE ASSISTANT  MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOBTo assist in the provision of care, and work together as part of a team to achieve required standards.  To ensure that residents retain their dignity, privacy and individuality. EDUCATIONAL LEVELExperience of working with relevant group preferred, but not essential.  To hold an NVQ in health and social care, or a willingness to undertake vocational training programmes. EXPERIENCEExperience in meeting the needs of older people is preferred, but not essential.  Evidence of high level commitment to personal development, training and education. PERSONAL QUALITIESTo have a genuine interest in working within a caring environment.  Have an ability to communicate effectively at all levels.  To be able to work as part of ateam.  To be a kind, considerate person who is innovative and caring. SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES To ensure that the highest possible levels of care are maintained by supporting/assisting residents when required, with washing, dressing, undressing, toileting and all other aspects of daily living.Assist residents in all aspects of their care needs, i.e. physical, emotional and spiritual.  Provide attention when needed, whilst ensuring that residentsmaintain their comfort, privacy and dignity.Pay particular attention to assisting residents who have limited mobility or physical problems, making the best use of aids, promoting independence wherever possible.Closely monitor residents who may be confused and/or may have behavioural problems.Assist in the promotion of continence.Assistin the delivery of care and support for residents who are dying or who have progressive illnesses, and their families/friends.Adhere to care planning needs for residents and maintain a daily record of events for each resident, under supervision of senior staff.Assist where and when possible in the framework of social activities by interacting with residents and assisting them to continue their chosen hobbies an activities.Answer the nurse call system bells promptly, giving assistance as required.  Answer the door and telephone appropriately and politely.  Respond accordingly and pass on messages accurately and promptly.Report on the well being of residents to the senior carer/team leader or nurse in charge.Carry out checks on residents at regular intervals as determined in the plan of care and/or as senior staff members have determined.Make visitors feel welcome into the Home and offer/provide refreshments as and when required.Make and change beds, ensuring that the rooms are clean and tidy, commodes are emptied in line with the Home’s disposal of waste products.Clean and maintain equipment used by residents, i.e. wheelchairs, hearing aids, glasses, moving and handling equipment, and report if in need of repair.Ensure the Home environment is kept clean and tidy.To work flexibly with the Home environment at the discretion of the Home Manager.Ensure clothing is adequately named on admission and any new clothes brought in thereafter. Record any valuables within the residents’ notes.Assist residents during meal times, be aware of anyone with swallowing difficulties or special dietary needs.  Assist with the serving of food and drinks as required.  Dispose of waste as per Home’s common practice/policy.Escort residents travelling to and from the Home, e.g. social outings and hospital visits as required.Participate in staff and resident meetings as and when required.Maintain knowledge and competence by attending mandatory training days/courses on or off site as required.  Please note that is part of your contract with Roche Healthcare that you attend.Participate in relevant NVQ training to achieve required qualifications if not already achieved.Report immediately to the nurse in charge any illnesses of an infectious nature and any accident /incident involving residents, self or another person.Understand and ensure implementation of the Home’s health and safety policy, emergency and fire procedures.Report to the nurse in charge, handyperson or Home Manager any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment or potential hazard, e.g. spillages immediately.Promote safe working practices within the Home.Ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.  This includes information to persons in or outside the Home.Notify the Home Manager or nurse in charge as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty before your duty is to commence, and also upon your return to work from all periods of sickness or absence.Ensure that the security of the Home is maintained at all times.  Ask each person unknown to you politely who they are, who they are here to see and where appropriate ask for their identification.Adhere to all company policies and procedures within the defined timescales.  Also refer to the staff handbook at all times.Carry out any other tasks that be reasonably assigned to you.      View full job description
