    PERSONAL CARE WORKER JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSON SPECIFICATIONDRIVING LICENSE & OWN TRANSPORT IS ESSENTIALJOB TITLE:              Personal Care WorkerREPORTS TO:         Care/Support ManagerBASED AT:          Neath    SUMMARY OF POST: To give practical help, personal care and support to service users who are unable to meet their own needs and require support with personal and daily living tasks in order to live safely within their own home. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIESTo visit nominated service users in their own homes as directed by the Manager.To carry out all tasks with sensitivity to the wishes/choice of the service user and when appropriate, caring relatives, in order to maintain a high standard and continuity of care that complies with the requirements of the service.To encourage each individual to be as independent as possible and enable him/her to exercise informed choice taking into account any risk involved.To use the most appropriate form of communication (verbal and/or non-verbal with the individual).To contribute to the protection of individuals from abuse.To contribute to the health, safety and security of individuals and their environment, operating to standards as prescribed by health & safety legislation.To notify the manager on duty of any matter affecting the well-being of the service users and to summon appropriate assistance in an emergency.To assist the manager in maintaining good liaison with other personnel involved in the care of the service user eg community nurses, social workers etc as part of a caring team.  DOMICILIARY DUTIESAssist service users in and out of bed, who may be bedfast or wheelchair dependent, using safe procedures including use of any special equipment that has been supplied eg hoists.Assist service users to dress, undress and take care of aids and personal equipment (eg hearing aids, glasses, dentures, etc)Assist service users with personal hygiene needs – washing, bathing, shaving and showering etcAssist service users with their nutritional needs.Toileting and emptying commodes and disposal of incontinence pads.Encourage service users to maximise their own abilities and skills and to encourage positive risk taking. PRACTICALPrepare and cook meals in accordance to the service user’s nutritional needs.Operate sources of warmth. GENERAL DUTIESMaintain accurate written time sheets and submit them on a weekly basis to the Manager.Maintain accurate legible, signed written records if required and submit them to the Manager as required. Maintain confidentiality at all times and report any complaints or concerns to the Manager.To participate in appropriate training as provided including NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care.Participate in meetings as appropriate and attend regular group supervision sessions.To carry out any other duties as required if agreed by the Manager.      PERSON SPECIFICATION EssentialDesirableWork Experience & KnowledgeBasic understanding of the principles of care.Understand the implications of abuse.Understand the importance of health & safety issues in the service users home (TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED)Have personal experience of caring for people eg raising a family, caring for elderly relatives, voluntary or paid.SkillsHave basic practical skills eg preparing and cooking simple meals.         ******************Special AptitudesAbility to work under pressure.Ability to work without supervision.Ability to respond in a flexible manner to meet the needs of the service users.           ******************Personal qualities & AttributesTo be able to act on own initiative.Have an understanding of the importance of treating people fairly and with respect, regardless of race, sexuality, religion, age, gender or disability.           ******************Other requirementsNeed to be available for a flexible working pattern over 7 days on a rota basis.Be willing to undertake relevant training as necessary including NVQAccess to own transport.           ****************** PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS POST IS SUBJECT TO ENHANCED DISCLOSURE AS PROVIDED BY THE CRIMINAL RECORDS BUREAU, AN EXECUTIVE AGENCY OF THE HOME OFFICE.
