HMRC is one of the biggest of any organisation in the UK and we run the biggest digital operation in government. Our digital business runs the IT behind tax and benefits services for 45 million individual and 4.9 million business customers. We are undergoing a major transformation programme, which includes a £200 million investment in digitisation, so customers can do more for themselves online and in real time, on computers, tablets and smartphones, bringing HMRC bang up to date, in line with banks and other large customer operations. We are building a team of outstanding people who will create and run these new and improved digital services. We will be using modern technology and agile development methods, and release as much of our work as possible as open source software. As a Content Designer at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) you will be responsible for designing content (both informational and to support new digital services), mainly on the GOV.UK website. You will work with user researchers, designers, subject experts, business analysts and policy/legal teams to produce outstanding digital services and information. The material you develop will cover a wide range of topics and users, so you need to be user-focused and know how to design first and foremost for the customer. You’ll also act as a constant source of expertise and knowledge for team members and colleagues across government. Content design is a critical role within HMRC’s digital team as the content we provide needs to be high quality and encourage people to use GOV.UK as their preferred way of dealing with government. We need excellent content designers who understand digital, language, technology and people. As a Content Designer at HMRC you will: • Design high quality content for HMRC’s informational content and digital services on GOV.UK with the needs of users as the primary focus • Research topics to identify user needs and understand policies and processes • Take complex language and processes and make them simple to understand and act on, whilst maintaining factual accuracy • Create content that’s accessible and usable and written to Government style and standards • Work with user researchers to test user understanding of content and journeys to and from it • Use feedback and metrics to refine content • Work quickly to design or change content in light of external factors such as changes to policy, legislation, technology or user needs • Build relationships and work effectively within an agile delivery model with colleagues and external providers, for example user researchers and subject experts. • Communicate credibly with a wide range of digital delivery disciplines and talent both internally and externally. Desired Skills and Experience: • Experience of working within a digital environment • Experience of working with content management and publishing systems • Experience of writing to government style and standards. Travel to other offices / overnight stays will be expected occasionally. Person specificationEssential Skills and Experience: • Experience of designing digital content, with proven ability of creating content that’s easy to understand and accessible. • Experience of user-centred design starting with user needs. • Experience in choosing the best format for displaying information to the user • Experience in using metrics and user feedback to define/refine content • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills  View full job description
