Sheffield is part of the national Henry Royce Institute (with the main Hub in Manchester) which aims to grow the UK world-leading research and innovation base in advanced materials science, fundamental to all industrial sectors and the national economy.  As part of this initiative two new research centres will be created - the Royce Discovery Centre (RDC) and the Royce Translational Centre (RTC). These state-of-the-art facilities will allow materials discovery, materials manufacturing and prototype production and will act as an open access centre of excellence for the UK.  This role will support the nuclear materials research theme within the Royce Discovery Centre, which will focus on the development of new materials for nuclear energy applications, in particular the encapsulation and disposal of radioactive wastes.  Key duties of the Research Associate will include overall technical operation of the facilities and development of research competency across a range of materials radiochemistry and surface science capability, to support a programme of nuclear materials research. You will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in chemistry, material science, engineering or any other relevant discipline. The candidate will have substantive expertise in analytical chemistry, in particular the operation, calibration and maintenance of Inductively Couple Plasma – Mass Spectrometry and Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-MS and ICP-OES).  Desirable experience includes surface analysis of materials by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Vertical Scanning Interferometry (VSI), radiochemistry techniques, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.  For the operational management of the facility, excellent project and people management skills are essential, preferably with experience in managing and delivering multiple research and development projects for a range of stakeholders. You will be familiar with all relevant Health and Safety rules and regulations. Finally, the candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as experience of supervising and line managing staff. Sheffield is one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK.
