This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious and motivated individual to gain hands-on experience whilst working towards a professional qualification. The Competition and Economics Division is a sub division of Strategy and Competition and leads on the FCA’s competition work. Amongst other work, this includes taking enforcement action against breaches of competition law. We have opened the FCA’s first competition enforcement case and have others in the pipeline.Competition and Economics Division has grown from a very small team in 2013 to a Division of approximately 140 staff. We have a great mix of talented people with a wide variety of experience in financial services, supervision, policy, competition law and economics.What does this job involve?As an apprentice paralegal, you will work in the Competition Enforcement and Strategy Department which is leading the FCA’s enforcement activities under the Competition Act 1998. Your role will involve handling sensitive and confidential information and typical activities that may be carried out may include:Supporting your manager(s) in planning and delivering projects according to FCA expectations which may include:Research and analysing information which is sometimes complexDrafting and producing legal documents, templates and formsReviewing documentary evidence on FCA systemsManaging the case email inbox and case folders in our electronic document storage systemDealing with representations on confidentiality for the case file (e.g. access to file)Creating indexes and bundlesProviding administrative support to the wider case team in organising team meetings and maintaining case recordsKeeping your manager and team members appropriately informed of progress and flagging any issues or concerns at the earliest possible opportunityAbout the employer:There are few jobs where you can make a real difference to the 2 million people who work in the UK Financial Services industry, the 40 million consumers of financial products and the stability of our economy as a whole.From regulating Consumer Credit to driving action on Foreign Exchange manipulation or helping strengthen accountability in the banking sector, the FCA is working with the industry to protect consumers, ensure the integrity of the UK financial system and promote fair and effective competition. Additional learning within the apprenticeship will enable you to be awarded a Level 4 Certificate of Higher Education in Legal Services which can afford you exemptions from the first year of the Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship (providing Contract Law was chosen as the elective module).Your apprenticeship shall be delivered by a blend of online and face-to-face training from BPP University Law School and on-the-job learning.Skills required:Good written and oral communication skillsAbility to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary teamConfidenceQualifications required:Minimum of 3 A Levels at grade C+ in addition to 5 GCSEs at grade C including English and Maths or equivalent qualifications.
