You are invited to apply for a UK Space Agency funded PDRA position, which will be based at the Open University, and will involve working up to eight months at the University Essex with Dr McGenity and Dr Steinke (co-Is on the grant). The aim of the project is to investigating the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a Mars analogue environment and to use this information to interpret data from the NOMAD (Nadir and Occultation for Mars Discovery) instrument onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. The aim of the instrument is to investigate the origins of methane and other trace gases in the Martian atmosphere, which could be due to biological (from extinct or extant life), geophysical or exogenous processes. Ultimately, this project will inform on the biological processes that could potentially occur on Mars and how evidence of such life could be detected. You will combine field work with laboratory-based simulation experiments to identified biological VOCs that could be used as evidence of life on Mars. This work is truly multidisciplinary, combining microbiology, molecular biology with geochemistry.
