Principal consultantLocation: AberdeenPermanent roleEnvironmental Assessment and Management/Risk Data Management/InternationalThis role will contribute to the development of our International Oil and Gas Unit, assisting in the preparation and management of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for international, marine renewable energy and offshore oil and gas projects. In addition the successful candidate may be required to contribute to other work that is appropriate to their skills and experience. Reporting to the Team leader, the position will involve client management, work-winning, project management, hands-on project work and the application of commercial and technical skills and knowledge. The position is based in Aberdeen, but occasionally Consultants are required to work offshore and/or overseas. Essential Attributes: • Good academic background (preferably in a marine environmental discipline) • Well developed background knowledge in marine biology, ecology and EIA techniques • Understanding of the overseas market and experience in working in foreign countries • Strong aptitude for gathering, assimilating and analysing information about physical, chemical, biological and social environments, and environmental regulatory requirements • Ability to gather, assimilate and analyse information that may not relate to your core discipline, e.g. engineering for oil and gas and renewable energy projects, or the output from environmental modelling studies • Motivated self-starter and ability to work independently with client personnel (mainly engineers) • Excellent technical writing skills and competence in the Microsoft Office suite of software • Good attention to detail, thoroughness, perseverance and the ability to complete work • Good communication, organisational and time management skills and a strong team player. Desirable Attributes: • Previous experience of consultancy • Experience of the oil and gas and/or marine renewables energy sectors • Environmental Management Systems experience Purpose of the jobAs a Principal Consultant you are a Company expert in your core area working as part of the clients’ Environmental Assessment and Management (EAM)/Risk and Data Management (RDM)/International* Consultancy Team project managing, preparing, contributing to and reviewing costings, proposals, reports and other deliverables as required by clients ensuring efficient delivery and client satisfaction. As Project Director for a portfolio of projects you will take responsibility for assisting in managing team workloads including supervising, coaching and mentoring more junior staff. From time to time there is a requirement to provide support to the other Consultancy Teams across the business contributing to Client Relations Management and Business Development activities by maintaining existing client relations. You will input to the implementation of marketing plans and strategies generating new business. You will develop your core specialism working with the business to ensure the Company’s technical skills and knowledge are competitive in the market place developing skills in business management, business development, project management or taking on the responsibility of deputy team leader as applicable to the role. You will also gain an understanding of the client’s core services and be required to communicate these to clients and other third parties. As part of this you will develop a network of contacts within other subsidiaries. Organisations & RelationshipsDetails of to whom the post reports, for whom it is responsible and the other functions/staff/ organisation with whom it has key contact. Your Line Manager is the Team Leader of the Environmental Assessment and Management (EAM)/Risk and Data Management (RDM)/International* Consultancy Team. You may be required to deputise for the Team Leader and assume delegated responsibilities as required for time to time.As Project Director you will set, monitor and control project work scopes and budgets ensuring that projects are delivered profitably, within scope and to the client’s satisfaction.You are required to liaise with clients, regulators and other third parties as appropriate to fulfil individual requirements of project or other tasks within your competency. You will provide support to Lead and Senior Consultants, Consultants, Graduate Consultants and other team members as directed.Responsibilities & TasksDetail of the key duties and responsibilities of the post including any particular targets or performance standards required.• Acting as Project Director.• Tender preparation, including costings.• Coaching, Mentoring and Supervising Lead Senior Consultants, Senior Consultants, Consultants and Graduate Consultants• Assisting in the management of team workloads.• Quality Assurance/Technical Review.• Comply with Health & Safety, environmental and quality management requirements of the Company.Marketing & Business Generation• Input to Marketing and Business generation.• Managing specific marketing campaigns.• Client Relationship Management.• Sell on the client’s service to existing clients as appropriate.• Establish new contacts and generate new business.Financial• Time management and completion of timesheets.• Use of the F03 tool, WiP reports and invoice raising.• Financial management and costing of projects.• Input to delivery of team targets.Staff Management• Project Management of project teams.• Managing sub-consultants under supervision.• Deputise for Team Leader as required.Project Director• Set project work scopes and budgets.• Monitor and control project budgets.• Proactively troubleshoot to minimise business risk, resolve technical issues that would affect quality and delivery, resourcing issues and client issues.• Report project performance as part of contribution to team targets.In addition to these duties the post holder may be required to carry out such other duties as may reasonably be required, from time to time, to achieve the above job purpose.Key Performance Indicators• Direct projects and ensure completion to expected technical standard within scope, time and budget.• Customer Satisfaction as evidenced by no major rewrites at the client’s expense, no formal complaints and customer retention.• Meet your expected fee utilisation target and keep administration time to a minimum.• Coach and mentor any staff assigned to you to enable them to develop specific skills and perform specific tasks.• Management of assigned key clients.• Management of assigned staff members as applicable.• Maintain you’re CV, Client Contacts, Project Profiles and CPD record up to date.Resources, Authority & ApprovalDetails of the resources for which the post holder is responsible and the limits of the post holder’s authority, including the point at which approval is required from management in terms of decision making, expenditure etc.• Sign off reports, proposals and F03 as Project Director • Sign off own reports as Project Manager• Sign of own projects as Project Manager• Prepare billing requests• Prepare and sign expense claims for authorisation by the Managing Director or designated deputy• Prepare and sign project purchase orders• Prepare and submit timesheets for authorisation by Line Manager.Special ConditionsAny special requirements or working conditions e.g. Travel, driving licence, site working etc.• To work at the offices and sites of clients for short or prolonged periods as required.• To work offshore as required subject to appropriate training.• To work overseas as required.• To ensure risk assessments have been completed, the appropriate safeguards are in place and Personal Protective Equipment is used as appropriate.• Flexibility to work outside of standard hours as required View full job description
