What does the role have to offer? The free schools programme is a key government flagship policy in education, and a top ministerial priority. It is an extremely fast paced, innovative and exciting programme to be part of, differing significantly from previous initiatives in both delivery and timescales. The ESFA Free Schools Capital team plays a crucial role in this, finding sites and building new schools that are approved by Ministers. Project Directors oversee a team of Project Managers and specialists to deliver free schools. The exact numbers of projects will vary depending on the programme, complexity and stage of each project. The PD may also lead on programme wide issues alongside project delivery, and take forward improvement priorities relating to areas such as procurement, processes or stakeholder management. What are my responsibilities? Successfully driving projects through the delivery process from inception to completion in the required timescales, by: 1. Lead a team of Project Managers coordinating all specialists involved in the development process, providing advice and support to facilitate the value for money delivery of projects. 2. Coordinating the work of ICT, Technical, Legal and Property experts to enable delivery of the school premises, ICT and FF&E within the agreed budgets to tight timescales. 3. Ensuring accurate programme and financial information is reported 4. Liaising with other parts of DfE as necessary to finalise the funding requirements for the project, secure all necessary approvals and prepare papers for Ministerial and/or Treasury approval 5. Representing ESFA in meetings with school trusts, local authorities and contractors, and developing and maintaining relationships 6. Providing strategic direction and oversight on projects. 7. Identifying, escalating and resolving strategic or complex risks and issues 8. Ensuring policies and framework requirements are implemented and lead on ESFA internal approvals. 9. Assist in the identification of suitable potential sites, using appropriate internal and external support as necessary. The successful candidate may also be required to take on additional duties based on business need and as agreed with the Southern Deputy Director. Reasonable travel costs will be met ensuring value for money for the department. Reasonable travel costs to sites and business meetings will be met, ensuring value for money for the department. One of the following qualifications is preferred: • a relevant professional or technical qualification to degree level or equivalent (e.g. project management, quantity surveying, construction or relevant subject matter). and/or • membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institute of Building, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers).  View full job description
