The School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant in the area of Internet Engineering. Successful applicants to these two posts will join a team of existing researchers, working within the scope of the EU Measurement and Architecture for a Middlebox Internet (MAMI) Project (mami-project.eu). This will suit candidates whose key interests include transport protocol design, Internet measurement and evaluation of next generation networking techniques. The successful applicant will research a topic matched to their own background and experience, leading to publication of a conference paper or a contribution to a joint journal publication.   The available topics are: ·         Large-scale active measurements using the MONROE 3G/4G mobile measurement platform (www.monroe-project.eu). This will involve design, test execution and analysis of the measurement data to examine the way mobile networks modify/restrict the use of Internet protocols.·         Exploration of new protocol mechanisms to allow Internet protocol stacks to exchange capacity/QoS signalling with mobile 5G cellular infrastructure, designed for use with a next generation eNodeB.·         Measurement and experimentation to promote differentiated services and explicit congestion notification techniques in deployed networks·         Analysis of web server log files to understand the negotiation of advanced transport protocol features (e.g. using QUIC) and the obstacles to selecting new transport parameters.·         Development of new transport techniques to choose an appropriate packet size and build tools to test deployment in support of standardising PMTU Discovery.  All applicants must have a background in the TCP/IP networking stack, network measurement, and be proficient in programming in C or Python.  You are expected to have knowledge of the Linux/BSD operating system and network design principles. An understanding of software development is desirable for some activities. Experience is desirable in protocol analysis using tools such as wireshark. For some of the listed activities, experience of network configuration and other skills are desirable, but not essential.
