Research Associate (Plant Molecular Cytogeneticist)Location: LeicesterDepartment: Genetics and Genome BiologySalary details: Grade 7 £33,518 to £35,550 per annum due to funding restrictionsAdvertising End Date: 16 May 2018 About the roleOur exciting interdisciplinary project seeks to provide knowledge to help improve livelihoods in Colombia by: defining the ploidy and genome composition of grass accessions to improve breeding strategies; analysing genomic and RNA sequence to measure diversity within and between species in the genera Brachiaria and Panicum (sensu lato); developing approaches to identify the origins of genomes; collaborative research, and training of tropical partners; and dissemination of results. We will integrate genomic sequence, molecular diversity and cytogenetic data, with environmental and economic data and aim to improve breeding of these important forage grasses.The project “Exploiting biodiversity in Brachiaria/Panicum tropical forage grasses using genetics to improve livelihoods and sustainability” is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), in collaboration with CIAT (International Centre for Tropical Agriculture, Colombia). You will be responsible for carrying out and publishing the cytogenetic and some genomic parts of the project. You will lead, conduct, and manage a significant laboratory and informatics project in Leicester, UK, integrating your research with work in Colombia, RNA analysis in Norwich, environmental work in Edinburgh, and the genetic work in Rothamsted, under the guidance of the project team.About youEducated to doctoral level, you will ideally have proven experience in the areas of plant molecular biology, cytogenetics, genomics, grasses and grass breeding, and bioinformatics.Additional informationFull-time fixed term contract for six months in the first instance.  Informal enquiries are welcome, please contact Professor Pat Heslop-Harrison on phh4@le.ac.uk.  Interviews are anticipated to take place on 28 May 2018.  View full job description
