Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in “Energy Modelling and Analysis” as part of the H20

Company: University of Bristol

Location: Bristol UK

Date Posted:May 01, 2018

The Computer Science Department at the University of Bristol invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Senior Research Associate position in a leading-edge collaborative research project on Time, Energy and Security Analysis for Multi/Many-core Heterogenous Platforms (TeamPlay), funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The TeamPlay project () aims to develop new techniques and tools that enable energy, time and security transparency, allowing developers to reason about both the functional and the non-functional properties of their software at the source code level and permitting resource management at runtime. TeamPlay is application-driven, with industrial use cases from computer vision, satellites, flying drones, medical applications and cyber security. Research at Bristol will focus on energy modelling and analysis techniques to provide energy transparency from hardware to software, as well as software-level optimizations that exploit this transparency to achieve low-energy computing. You will conduct in-depth research into energy modelling techniques, construct and evaluate energy models, and contribute to the development of energy consumption analysis and optimization techniques, addressing a variety of hardware platforms and use cases as provided by the industrial partners in the TeamPlay project. You will be working in close collaboration with Prof. Eder, Dr Jose Nunez-Yanez and Dr Kyriakos Georgiou at the University of Bristol as part of the Trustworthy Systems Laboratory. Depending on your experience, there are opportunities for you to take significant initiative, leadership and responsibility towards realizing the research objectives of the TeamPlay project. You hold, or expect to hold, a PhD in Computer Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems or Microelectronics, or in a closely related field. Alternatively, you have a first degree in one of these subjects and substantial experience in a research role in industry. You must have strong programming and modelling skills, be able and confident to undertake hands-on work with embedded hardware and be comfortable working across the layers in the system stack ranging from hardware to application software. It would be an advantage to have a strong background in at least one of the following areas: energy measurement and modelling, resource consumption analysis and optimization, embedded architectures, compilers. You have excellent written and spoken communication skills and an ability to explain and share deep concepts and techniques with colleagues. You enjoy working in an international team and have excellent self-motivation. You seek an intellectual challenge, you strive for excellence in research and, depending on experience, you are ready to take initiative and responsibility. Excellent fresh PhD graduates are strongly encouraged to apply. Interviews are expected to be held shortly after the closing date. The start date is as soon as possible and at the latest by September 2018. For further information and to discuss details please contact the Principal Investigator, Prof. Kerstin Eder, on 0044 117 9545146 or by email  The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
