 Job TitleSupport WorkerYCS Job RefSW-YCS-0912Reports to Senior Care Co-OrdinatorIndustryCare Services Primary LocationBirmingham Employment TypeFull- Time/Part TimeJob Purpose:A Support Worker role is multifaceted and involves numerous dutieshowever; the fundamental objective of this role is to perform duties and tasks that enhance the lives of service users within their own homes. The main aim is therefore to provide care that will allow the service user to live more independently, comfortably and safely. The post holder will be responsible for acquiring knowledge of the wishes and needs of our clients, so that we are able to assist them to maintain and increase their physical wellbeing, personal independence and choice, in the best way possible. Therefore an essential requirement in this role is the ability to effectively communicate with our service users, their family, friends and other health and social care professionals. The specific tasks which will need to be undertaken by you will depend on the specific service user’s needs that you would be supporting and their personal choices. Domiciliary care often requires Care Assistants to travel around locations. Therefore the post holder must be able to meet the travel requirements of the post, be this by public transport or private transportation. Key Responsibilities-Personal Care: The broad tasks that this will involve are: assisting the client to wake up, wash, dress and prepare for the dayand then later assisting them in preparation to go to bed at the end of the day. This should include:Washing, bathing, showering, oral care and groomingAssisting the service user to eat and drinkToileting, assisting with use of commode and in emptying the commodeProviding medication promptsContinence managementAdministering medication (when needed)Dressing/undressing and assisting with appearancePreparing meals for the service userTaking part in a number of manual handling tasks daily both with and without equipment. The suitable candidate must have the ability to competently carry out tasks in accordance with individual client’s needs Accurate completion of Care Plans and other documents related to the service user’s careWorking and communicating between other health and social care professionals  Domestic Care: This would involve assisting the service user to live independently in their own home; this would normally involve general housekeeping duties which could include:LaundryGenerally making sure that the customer is comfortable and warmHousekeeping and cleaningChecking the house for any maintenance problems and reporting theseBed making  Social Care: This would involve increasing the customer’s wellbeing by increasing their access to the community and independence in everyday tasks:Shop and manage suppliesProviding a “sitting service”Collect pensions and prescriptionsAgreeing goals and outcomes with customers and reviewing these regularlyAccompany the customer to do their shopping etcEngaging with the customer and showing an interest through talking and listeningTaking the customer to visit day centres/hospitals etc.  Client CareComplete all required documentation accurately and in accordance with company policies and proceduresReport any concerns or issues relating to the welfare of the customer or equipment to the Team Leader or Care Co-ordinator Attend all mandatory training events in accordance with regulatory requirements and company policyAttend supervision and team meetings in accordance with regulatory requirement and company policy Person SpecificationsAble to demonstrate some experience of having worked with clients with neurological conditions or ABIAt least 6mths experience as a Care Assistant, caring professionally or for a family memberPassionate about CareA good understanding of confidentiality and the Data Protection ActDriver is an advantageAbility to show empathy and recognise the importance of putting the customer or service user firstAble to commit to fixed rota patternsVery strong punctuality and attendanceGood verbal, numeracy and written skillsSafeguarding of vulnerable peopleAchieved NVQ in Health and Social Care Level 2, or commitment to  working towardsKnowledge of Health & Safety in the work placeMust demonstrate proven track record of experience within a previous role within the community and home care industryAbility to continuously learn and develop new skills and increase knowledge Health and Safety: As an employee of Your Care Services, the post holder has a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to:Take reasonable care of the health and safety of themselves and all other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.Co-operate with their employer to ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation and the Health and Safety policies and procedures, not intentionally or recklessly interfere with, or misuse, anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare, in pursuance of the relevant statutory provisions. Training and Supervision: All employees working with service users are required to undertake a variety of essential training to fulfil our obligations and failure to follow a reasonable request will prevent you from undertaking any paid work.You will be required to attend company orientation training and undertake any dutiesgiven to you by your supervisor for the purpose of completing your trainingIn order to ensure and maintain a safe working environment, you will be required to attend specific training sessions relating to Health and Safety and Moving & HandlingYou will be required to complete the Common Induction Standards trainingYou will be required to register for NVQ level 2 within 12 months of employment and complete it within 3 years, unless you already hold this qualificationYou will be required to attend regular supervision sessions with your manager / supervisor and to participate in the performance appraisal processYou will be required to attend on-going training sessions, which will include training in dealing with the user groups you will be caring for and/or supporting Duty of Care: This is a legal term meaning you have a responsibility towards everyone you come intocontact with to ensure they are not caused harm. Training will provide you with the knowledge to give high quality care to your service users, reducing the risk of harm to them and to you. As with any social or personal care given by you to the service user, the duty of care is absolute and on noaccount must tasks be performed by you for which you have not been trained. Data ProtectionThe post holder must uphold the requirements of the Data Protection Act by ensuring that service user information is kept confidential.
