We’re part of the Tata Group, one of the largest, most diverse conglomerates in the world with businesses in the UK including Tata Steel, Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley Tea.Swansea University and Tata Steel have entered into an agreement whereby they will jointly undertake collaborative research activities at the University and jointly create new research facilities and capabilities within a National Steel Innovation Centre (NSIC). This new Innovation Centre will be hosted by Swansea University in partnership with the businesses of Tata Steel UK and the broader steel sector across the UK.The shared vision is the creation of an open access Innovation Centre for the entire UK steel sector. The Innovation centre will initially be located at the Universities Singleton campus whilst new “state of the art” facilities are developed in close proximity to the Bay campus. This is a once in a generation opportunity to establish an industry driven Centre that will deliver a globally competitive and innovation focused, 21st Century UK Steel Industry.The centre will house a new team of high calibre researchers, technologists and industrial experts who aim to transform the UK steel industry into a global leader in low carbon iron and steelmaking with particular specialisms in novel materials development, late stage product diversification, value adding coatings technology and novel construction materials for creating active building facades.The RoleWe are recruiting for candidates with a background in metallic coatings technology with understanding of fundamental metallurgical and/or electrochemical principles in the applications of electro-plating and galvanising.Working under the Research & Development Manager, both independently and as part of a team, you will lead & participate in the support & development of steel welding technology in automotive & tubes contexts. You will also work closely with the Failure & Fatigue expert for a wholesome understanding of the weld performance.You will gain understanding of the performance requirements by collaborating with the customers and help identify opportunities for future developments.The role will be in a multi-disciplinary thriving creative atmosphere with a collaborative framework which encompasses the other domestic and foreign R&D groups, operations in the various sites and Tata Steel sponsored Universities.You will secure Tata Steel intellectual property positions by publishing patents, and maintain Tata Steel’s reputation as an innovative knowledge leader by publishing scientific and technical papers.There will be a requirement to travel to, and work at Tata Steel manufacturing facilities to strengthen collaborations and conduct or assist trials.What we are looking forWe are looking for an individual with knowledge and/ or experience of steel welding technology & metallurgy, including their manufacturing processes, markets and application. You will have a Masters degree or Doctorate with a focus on Metallurgy, Materials Science or associated discipline, and have previous experience of research or of working in the area of welding.You will also have an understanding of composition, thermomechanical processing, heat treatment interactions and Non Destructive Testing in the welding context. You will have a track record of welding experience in heavy industry and familiarity with BS, EN and American quality standards. Intellectual creativity, strong communication and presentation skills are essential as well as team working skills and a commitment to health & safety.A full UK driving licence is desirable as well as a willingness to travel to other sites. Closing date: 11pm, Wednesday 13 December 2017 View full job description
